Propagation Project; Surf Conch
The sculpture is assembled from thousands of forged mild steel components. The repetition of multiple units forms the basis of Junko’s work. The sculptural piece is a part of Junko’s Propagation Project series that focuses on how the process of heating and hammering can transform cold, hard, mild steel into something that appears soft, moving and organic.

Propagation Project; Surf Conch was inspired by the wild nature of the coastal area where the artisan lives. Each individual element is shaped like a curling wave – symbolic of surging energy, releasing as the wave breaks.
The form also references a Protea – a South African flower with multiple stamens. Again, the tightly packed, unfurling individual steel elements are symbolic of great potential energy.
