Ashanti Stool

Jomo Tariku's Ashanti stool is a modern reimagining of the legendary Ashanti Golden Stool, which combines two powerful symbols from the Ashanti kingdom. The curved seat calls to mind the royal and divine throne of the king, while the circular base pays respect to the round golden regalia worn by the leader responsible for spiritual purification.

Assembled by hand, the stool comprises 28 parts that are machine-milled from 11-ply Baltic birch. The seat is formed from 16 layers and 12 layers form the base. With the help of alignment dowels on the inside, the parts are glued together in three-layer stacks to form the shape. Once all parts are glued, the stool edges are cleaned and sanded. The next four layers of water-based natural finish or water-based black paint are hand-applied followed by a water-based matte finish. Sanding or polishing happens between each layer. Once dry, handcrafted pins are inserted and feet added to the bottom of the base.
