This spare brushed sumi ink drawing is realized on Kitakata paper, a Japanese semi-handmade gampi paper known in the east for reflecting the traditional arts of Japan.

Wilson’s drawing approach is performative and references time - future, present and past. Drawings begin by imagining what a “future” production might be (in this case Madame Butterfly), the artist will also create drawings “in the present” while rehearsing the production in the theatre, later creating works in reflection of the past stage work.
