Jomo Tariku

Jomo Tariku is an Ethiopian American artist and industrial designer who is defining a new language for modern African design by synthesizing his experience of the continent’s diverse landscape, indigenous cultures, traditions, architecture, colours, artefacts, fashion, and other visual cues. Jomo’s designs offer a new line of inquiry and experience of modernity while venerating the rich historical palette of Africa.
Jomo’s first collection was launched in 2017 and has brought him to the attention of renowned curators and critics. His work is currently on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Mint Museum. Additionally, his works are in the permanent collections of several major US museums and have been published in prominent design and style publications.
Further to designing furniture, Jomo teaches and participates in forums related to design and is a co-founder of the Black Artists + Designers Guild.

Visually striking, yet effortlessly functional in any modern space, Jomo's work is rooted in Africa's rich cultural heritage. His aim is to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for elevated modern African design, and to inspire a deeper and fuller connection to the continent, by weaving its nature, art and history into each object. A constant student of African art and culture, Jomo's furniture includes a wide variety of artistic designs that synthesise his own experiences of the African continent's diverse culture, historical structures, architecture, traditional furniture, colours, artefacts, landscapes, wildlife, hairstyles and more. Intended to be heirloom pieces to be celebrated and enjoyed for generations to come, every design tells a unique story, with no detail overlooked or undervalued.
