Melting away the barriers

  • • Verena pairs technique with artistic creativity
  • • She loves exhausting the material’s versatility
  • • In 2021, she set up a glass maker space to work and teach

Verena Schatz sees herself as an artist and glassmaker. She operates at the intersections of art, craft and design, from interactive installations to sculptures and functional designs. “There are a multitude of aspects that appeal to me when dealing with this extremely versatile material,” Schatz says. “The greatest fascination still is the liquid and malleable state of glass, which often remains formally present in many of my works, despite the physical rigidity.” Verena trained in classic glass processing techniques. She worked as a glass technician before she began favouring the material as a creative and expressive medium. Her passion resulted in long-term study and periods of work in the US, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland.

Bundle

This sculptural piece, handcrafted from glass tubes and straps, consists of borosilicate tubes which are bound to a bundle and hung in the kiln where they are subsequently bent. The outstanding quality of the medium glass is characterised by its ambiguous nature. Being manifest and invisible at the same time make it a very appropriate medium to portray the intangible, giving form to aspects of our lives that are undeniably part of our existence.

The Work of the Night

In becoming a mother and loosing close members of her family, Verena Schatz went through some of the most fundamental human experiences during the creation of this sculptural glass piece, "Die Arbeit der Nacht" or "The Work of the Night". As a result of the way the heart has been constructed, it emits an organic character and possesses an intricate, landscape like surface. The excruciatingly slow process has become a meditative task as well as therapy throughout these various emotional states.

Emotional Leak

Emotions are the main subject of this series of handblown glass works. The surface of the glass cube seems wounded, it is covered with an intricate network of cracks. These small openings suggest an insight of what may be hidden inside.

The Only Constant in Life is Change

This sculptural piece, handcrafted from glass tubes, consist of industrial borosilicate tubes which are bound to a bundle and hung in the kiln where they are subsequently bent and slumped. Time and change are the central elements in this series of work. An investigation of the soft and fluid state of glass result in dynamic sculptures, which imply the freezing of time and movement.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being

This piece consists of individually blown glass tubes which are bound to a bundle and hung in the kiln where they are subsequently bent and slumped. Over a certain period, gravity and heat consistently change the shape of the piece. The tubes are slowly falling to the ground. During this transformational process, this body of flowing glass is cooled, and the state of flux gradually comes to an end.
