The art of tailoring

  • • Rudolf holds more than 15 historical imperial decrees
  • • He runs courses on how to knot a tie
  • • The company stages the Knize Cup, its own Polo tournament

Knize is Vienna’s most famous bespoke tailor: even if few Viennese people will ever be able to afford a Knize suit, almost everyone knows the famous shop on the Graben, one of the main and most elegant shopping promenades in Vienna’s city centre. Rudolf Niedersüß, the current owner of the famous brand, trained as a master dressmaker and men’s tailor in the 1950s and early 1960s at Knize. By buying the workshop of C.M. Frank, then another renowned local tailor with equally famous customers, Rudolf started his career as a tailor and entrepreneur. A few years later, he had the chance to also take over Knize and merge the two most prominent tailoring companies.

Der Frack

What would the black tailcoat, the undisputed king of the night, be without its contrasting bright white shirt? Ever since they came into fashion in 18th-century Britain, the white shirt, white stitching and white waistcoat have been considered the true stars of the tailoring world. There is no more comfortable clothing for a formal evening than the tailcoat: the flawlessly tailored jacket and high shirt collar will keep perfectly in shape all through the ball until the early hours of the morning.

Morning coat, trousers, waistcoat

The morning coat is arguably the most elegant apparel for a wedding. An adaptation of the frock coat, the morning coat was cut to knee height in the 1920s and since then has been combined with colourful waistcoats and extravagant silver-grey trousers.

Dinner jacket

The dinner jacket is a perfect blend of discretion and elegance. Any colour but black would be unheard of. To stand out from the others in dinner jackets, you need to count on the exquisite craftsmanship of your master tailor.
