When craft and logic meet on the loom

  • • Lise uses thread like a painter uses brushes or spatulas
  • • Her home studio is situated in south eastern Jutland
  • • She works on a digital Jacquard loom

Lise Frølund has always been fascinated by the mixture of craft and logic that goes into weaving. “You have only two sets of strings,” she says, “which cross each other at an angle of 90 degrees. But there is so much more to explore than meets the eye! I feel that I am so lucky I am not a painter, for example, because it would give me unlimited freedom; instead, what I really enjoy about weaving is that I have to ‘bend’ to very strict rules.” For the past 20 years, Lise has worked exclusively on a digital Jacquard loom, with which she creates stunning tapestries and wall hangings that represent her very personal artistic expression, which she has developed over the course of several decades.

This handcrafted tapestry is one of a series of woven portraits. In all of them, Lise Frølund mirrors the portrait image diagonally across the fabric. The weaving is done on a digital Jacquard hand loom, which makes the complex thread construction possible and retains the flexibility of the hand in the weaving process.

Infinity, detail

This handwoven tapestry shows two standing boys. Their backs are turned towards us. They stand, completely quietly, looking over the endless sea. The weft of the tapestry comprises 2.5cm wide paper lamellas, which Lise Frølund dyes in six different colours. Close up, the design appears only as colourful dots. Only at a distance does it turn into a figurative tapestry. It is woven on a digital Jacquard hand loom.

Impossible puzzle

This tapestry is one of five by Lise Frølund. Together they make up a 6m long tale of family life. If the small tapestries are alternately shown with the reverse side facing, the figures of the family fit well together but the colours are all wrong. Conversely, if the colours are right the figures appear as fragments only. The idea is to show that the ideal family is not just around the corner.
