Textile explorations

  • • Georgia experiments through fabric and paper
  • • She held a solo exhibition at the Benaki Museum
  • • Her Greek heritage influences her

While working all day as a musician, Georgia Gremouti remembers staying up all night so she could draw and sculpt. “I realised then how important visual artwork was to me.” An artist in every sense, the Greek textile worker creates surprising fabric pieces where she combines many techniques such as pleating and origami. She experiments mainly with textiles and paper, exploring their visual potential. Strongly inspired by biology, Georgia's works derive from micro-landscapes – organic shapes that find an unexpected harmony. Before experimenting with textiles, she studied sculpture at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, which has had a real influence on her approach to materials and her way of exploring dimensions.

This silk neck piece is part of a thematic trilogy based on the life cycle. It is inspired by nature and the delicate, fragile, ephemeral forms of flowers. It is made from a semi-transparent silk that reveals the pleated structure, a delicate colour palette of subtle greens and pinks enhanced with the multiple layers of fabric. It can be worn wrapped on the body, skin showing through, evoking lightness and intimacy.

The brooch is finished with sterling silver details and a magnetic closure at the back. Science, genetics and technology reveal new wondrous, ambiguous universes. Diving into the strangeness and minutiae of the micro world is like combining facts with fairylands.

Potentiality I

This brooch, handcrafted from 100 percent silk habotai, is part of Georgia Gremouti’s Golden Fleece series, a thematic trilogy based on the life cycle. Georgia encapsulates an array of seeds within the fabric and uses sterling silver for the armature and closure. The potential and promise carried within a seed, before the actual germination phase, was the inspiration for this body of work.

The circular progressive rhythm is constructed in a series of expanding forms coloured in a spectrum of earthy tones to suggest movement.

Adding the zeros

The design of this neck piece is inspired by science, technology and the multitude of universes that are revealed to us as we dive into the macro-micro experience. The neck piece is made from silk habotai hand-painted with procion dyes and hand pleated using the encapsulation technique. No additions or armature are added, so the piece moves and changes shape when it is worn. It is designed as a landscape in an alternating rhythm of flowing shapes and organic forms.
