A young star in the world of glass

  • • Simone is well known for his lampworked bonsai trees
  • • In 2018 he was awarded the Talent du Luxe prize
  • • He uses a technique originally developed for scientific purposes

Simone Crestani was only 15 years old when he started his training in the workshop of his neighbour Massimo Lunardon, who was a master lampwork glassmaker. He was looking for a summer job that would enable him to earn a little money, but in the space of a couple of weeks he decided to leave school and dedicate himself to this craft. Today, still in his 30s, Crestani is internationally renowned as one of the most outstanding craftsmen of his generation, whose works have been showcased in a number of exhibitions around the world. For him, receiving the Talent du Luxe prize in 2018 was “the perfect way to celebrate my ‘coming of age’ in the professional world”.

Modern Trophy #3

A trophy is a paradoxical item in which nature and humans clash. In order to possess the beauty of nature, the animal is killed, therefore “in the very moment in which it is possessed, it is lost”. Through his Modern Trophy series, Simone offers a solution to this paradox; celebrate the beauty of life and nature through a detailed study and glass reconstruction.

Sakura

The colourless borosilicate glass trunk of a flowering cherry tree rises unevenly, before splitting into many branches with pink blossoms at their tips. The bonsai is a symbol of Simone’s work, representing his technical and creative journey, from the first roots that he put down during his initial training to making glasswork a lifelong commitment. “The bonsai is a concentration of life. It overcomes the barrier of size and expresses strength and energy; it is a work of art that is never finished.”

Glass Bonsai #2

A set of four colourless lampworked bonsai trees rise above each other as though in a peaceful forest. The bonsai is a symbol of Simone’s work, representing his technical and creative journey, from the first roots that he put down during his initial training to making glasswork a lifelong commitment. “The bonsai is a concentration of life; it overcomes the barrier of size and expresses strength and energy. It is a work of art that is never finished.”

This collection of elegant bottles each has a unique “trophy” bottle top featuring the horns of a wild animal: longhorn, deer and bighorn. The borosilicate glass was handmade using the lampworking technique.
