Roos has always been fascinated by nature, finding within this endless source of inspiration countless examples of movement and variations of light, shadow and transparency. Like nature itself, Roos likes to merge all kinds of natural materials. The cups, made of transparent bone china, also feature leather and copper wire. The interior is glazed but the exterior, left unglazed, takes on a skin-like quality. The cups become living creatures with wrinkles, bearing traces of time.

These thin, transparent, bone-china bowls and plates, shaped like blossoms, are part of a series comprising a range of different forms. Roos loves to create series like this, inspired by a particular gift of nature, which, as a source, is endless in its generosity. Each plate or bowl fits into a base plate that remains on the table during the meal. The fissure effects on the plates’ surface has been accentuated with black urushi lacquer using the Japanese kintsugi technique.

Myxomycetes is a series inspired by and named after the organisms that can be found in every ecosystem but are only visible through a microscope. Roos was invited by the National Botanic Garden of Belgium to create an exhibition around this theme for the World Myxomycetes Congress. A hole in the base of this vessel lets light flow through it. The vessel is an ode to fragility, which is a theme close to Roos’ heart.
