A Very Large Banana Leaves and Feather Leaves Bowl

The surface of this porcelain sculpture is elaborately decorated with a multitude of porcelain sprigs. These are painstakingly applied by hand to the form created on a potter’s wheel. Each sprig is individually moulded, carved and finished with fine brushes to ensure a highly detailed finish. Nature is an essential part of Hitomi Hosono's life; the artist takes great interest in the minute details of plants and utilises these elements in her work.

Hitomi Hosono’s larger pieces can take over a year and a half to create from inception to finish. The design of a new piece can entail more than six months of research, design and creation of new moulds. After this, there is an intense period of making which includes the fine carving of a multitude of sprigs which are then applied to the surface of the piece. The final work is then slowly dried for ten to twelve months before firing.
