A Hawthorn Bowl

The surface of this porcelain sculpture is decorated with individually hand-carved porcelain sprigs. Each sprig is formed separately in a mould designed and made by Hitomi Hosono, then carved and finished with fine brushes to ensure a highly detailed finish. Inspired by the Hawthorn tree, the delicate layering of the sprigs in this piece creates a sense of movement. The exterior of the piece, covered with these finely detailed porcelain leaves, contrasts perfectly with the gold-leaf interior.

Hitomi Hosono is fascinated by botanical forms: the veins of a leaf, the shape of its edges, the layering of a flower’s petals. When walking in nature Hitomi Hosono finds there are many opportunities to discover interesting plants; to touch, to feel the texture and examine structure. While studying minute details, Hitomi Hosono is searching for the essence of beauty in nature, attempting to transfer this infinite and complex beauty into her porcelain work.
