Pattern of Crafts

The panel is handmade using the straw marquetry technique that dates back to the 17th century. The straws are dyed in different colours, cut lengthwise, smoothed out and then glued onto a fibreboard to form a pattern. The undyed straws resemble gold due to their iridescent finish.

Exhibition curator Sebastian Herkner took the geometric pattern of the terrace of the Basilica of San Giorgio, on San Giorgio Maggiore island, and invited selected master artisans to interpret this lace-like octagonal pattern in a graphic artwork.
