Lögberg I

The vessel is built in white stoneware clay and painted with a black slip that is then scraped back to reveal the base material in two-tone monochrome patterns. The visible scrape marks create a shallow relief, a conversation between the pseudo-perfection of the geometric pattern and the tactile impurity of hand-manipulated clay.

Lögberg I is named after spectacular rock formations in south-west Iceland, at the location for the assembly of the country's Althing parliament, established in AD 938 and believed to be the first democratic parliament in the world. The name translates as Law Rock. It is a fault or a rift formed in the divergent tectonic boundary between the continental plates. It is beautiful in its textural richness and the lava formations can be seen running both horizontally and vertically down the rock face.
