It can take up to six months to transform a gourd into a lamp. The process starts with designing the pattern with mathematical precision and marking the position of every single hole. It is then painted and carved – in some places, the gourd is less than 1mm thick – before drilling up to 18,000 holes. The light seeps through the intricately carved wood and makes it orange while passing through thousands of holes, casting light patterns on the walls.
