The photograph depicts a fragment from the atelier of the Japanese National Living Treasure Komao Hayashi. Hayashi is a master maker of tōso dolls, which originated in the 17th century. The main material, tōso, is a mixture of wood flour and glue, which is highly elastic, adhesive and mouldable. Once dry, the tōso hardens and can be carved, making the material ideal for achieving intricate artistic expressions.
