Klubko / Rope Egg

The monumental glass sculpture rendering a rope is cast in an open-faced mould and left with an ungrounded surface. Ivan Mareš developed the unconventional practice of leaving the surface of the glass in its rough, post-cast state: an unadulterated, organic method of glass casting.

The form of Ivan’s first Rope Egg sculpture was successfully executed only after 12 months of failure. The sculpture soon became emblematic of his work. In 1987 the Rope Egg represented Czechoslovakia at the Venice Biennale.
