The photograph depicts Japanese National Living Treasure Kazumi Murose working at his atelier. Working in the maki-e technique, Murose is sprinkling gold and silver powders on wet urushi lacquer. Using a small tube-like tool, the master artisan taps it delicately to lightly spread the powder on the pattern painted with urushi. Once urushi stiffens, it becomes firm and resistant to water, fire and even light acid.
