The photograph depicts Japanese National Living Treasure Kazumi Murose working at his atelier. Murose works in the technique of maki-e, which consists of drawing a pattern with urushi lacquer. Before the lacquer dries, it is sprinkled with gold and silver powders using a small tube-like tool. The master artisan taps the tool delicately to lightly spread the powder. Once urushi stiffens, it becomes firm and resistant to water, fire and even light acid.
