The food bowl in magewa, bentwood work, is a superb example of the kyūshitsu technique. Isao Onishi contrasts darker colours of lacquer on the opening of the bowl against a bold red on the base. He uses urushi lacquer, produced in the town of Daigo, Ibaraki prefecture, refining the lacquer himself and never mixing it with oil. During each step, he paints and polishes his creation meticulously. Repeating this over and over allows him to bring out the beauty of the lacquer.
