Food vessel in magewa (bentwood work)

This food bowl in magewa, bentwood work, is a superb example of the kyūshitsu technique, contrasting strips of red lacquer with a matte black lacquer. Isao Onishi uses urushi lacquer produced in the town of Daigo, Ibaraki prefecture, refining the lacquer himself and never mixing it with oil. During each step, he paints and polishes his creation meticulously. Repeating this over and over allows him to bring out the beauty of the lacquer.
