The skull is part of a series called My Lovely Bones, comprising portraits of women who have meant a lot to Laurence. The chosen colours and feathers depict the characters of the women; their names precede the work, not the other way around. Laurence draws inspiration from the ancient knowledge found in tribal tales and cosmogonic myths. The feather was the standard value for weighing the ka (soul of the deceased) in ancient Egypt. It is the guarantor of harmony and universal balance in many cultures and shamans use it to communicate with the gods.
