These two handbuilt and polished stoneware vessels have been covered with a shiny copper glaze and fired at 1220°C. The pair of vases are from Ute Beck’s GLOSS & GLITTER series. The surface of the vases are broken with a landscape of bumps, folds, cavities and crater-like holes; other elements seem to have been taken from Baroque objects. The series plays on the notion of abundance, opulence and decadence of the baroque attitude to life.

Where fantasy meets humour

Ute Kathrin Beck’s imaginative ceramic vessels strike through the interplay of form and sculptural ornamentation. Her works are an expression of freedom, referencing the theme of the vessel but surpassing its limitations through vividness and materiality to evoke a multitude of associations in the eye of the beholder. The tripods, for which she received the Baden-Wuerttemberg State Prize in 2012, are reminiscent of the shapes of primeval sea dwellers, while her new series Glamour and Glimmer refers to baroque splendour. In the work of Ute Kathrin Beck a playful fascination for the dialogue between form and historical reference is apparent. Thus, utility vessels become cult objects, evoking archaic myths. They always take a provocative stance and therefore inevitably inspire.

These five vases form part of Ute Beck’s GLOSS & GLITTER series that explores and plays on notions of abundance, opulence and decadence of the baroque attitude to life. These sensuous vases enter into an amusing dialogue with contemporary questions of decadence. The vases were handbuilt from stoneware, glazed with shiny and matt platinum and copper glazes and finally fired at 1220°C.

The surfaces show folds, curvatures and crater-like indentations contrasting with certain formal elements taken directly from Baroque sculptures.
