Crochet inspired by Finland

  • • Eloïse started crochet as a hobby
  • • Living in Finland inspired her use of motifs
  • • The name Kaisla symbolises the old and the new

The name of Eloïse Boulerne's atelier, Kaisla, reflects the spirit central to her work: bringing back long-established traditions into contemporary craft. An old Finnish name, she describes “Kaisla” as also having a modern feel, just like the rugs she creates. Largely inspired by Finland, where the French-born craftswoman lived for a decade, she uses traditional patterns with a twist to design and create her rugs and link them with modern aesthetics. Working with the crochet technique, traditional and somewhat rooted in the past, Eloïse brings a new perspective to this craft and the possibilities it offers. Now settled in Hamburg, she founded Atelier Kaisla in 2019 with the goal of creating unique, thoughtfully crafted rugs with traditional Nordic designs.

Kukkamäki

"Kukkamäki" is Finnish for "the plain of flowers". It is decorated with floral motifs inspired by old embroideries from the Finnish region of Ostrobothnia, in the Seinäjoki area. The technique used is tapestry crochet which allows to alternate the colours but also to pad the work, making it thicker and more structured. Eloïse Boulerne's creations are crocheted with an eco-responsible material.

Laponia

This rug by Eloïse Boulerne, created using a tapestry crochet technique, bears the symbols of the region of Lapponia, specifically of the Sami tribe. Laponia is a tribute to the Lappish culture, but would fit wonderfully in any interior thanks to its geometrical style and its sober black and white colours.

Seinäjoki

Seinäjoki is the name of a Finnish town in the Ostrobothnia region. This rug is decorated with motifs inspired by an old wall tapestry that Eloïse Boulerne spotted in an old lady's house one day while living in Finland. This carpet is impressive because of the richness of its ornamentation, while retaining the very Nordic style from which Atelier Kaisla originated.

Vaasa

The Vaasa region is rich in traditional geometric patterns that lend themselves well to the tapestry crochet technique. The Vaasa rug, like other designs by Eloïse Boulerne, is inspired by old traditional patterns and mixes tradition and modernity. It is crocheted with an eco-responsible material that corresponds to Eloïse’s values: adapting the old to the visual tones of our present time, but also adapting the product in an environmentally friendly context.
