Traveller and wood lover

  • • Ursula's interest in sculpture dates back to her childhood
  • • She is connected to each piece she works on
  • • She has an interest in sustainability and ecology

Ursula Núñez studied art in Lima, Peru, the country where she was born. On a trip to Pucallpa, in the Peruvian jungle, she was able to obtain exotic woods with which she made sculptures during her MA at the Carnegie-Mellon Art Department. She has lived and worked in many countries: Peru, the US, Thailand, Switzerland and Spain – in each place she has loved getting to know the native wood. She is interested in working with local woods because she can find non-industrialised logs to work with. She currently has her workshop in Alicante. Her specialty is wood carving and her sources of inspiration are nature, the female form and the sea.

Rest

Rest, or "Descanso" in Spanish, is a small wood sculpture hand-carved from the root of an olive tree. One can distinguish the torso of a figure, whose head is a knot with dark markings leaning onto himself. The undulating rhythm of the body plays with the empty spaces and a variety of marks and textures that came with the root’s irregularities.

Fragile Equilibrium

Fragile Equilibrium, a sculpture handcrafted from eucalyptus wood and gold leaf, is part of Ursula Núñez’s Marinas series. The works of this series are inspired by her concern about the state of our oceans and its habitants. Seashells are objects of inspiration for Ursula. This sculpture is carved from a slab of eucalyptus; a hard wood that has a beautiful dark red colour and very subtle horizontal veins.

Metamorphose: Bird

The piece of holm oak wood at the core of this sculpture had traces of fire burns in the intersection of three branches; it also had a gorgeous dark red bark that Ursula Núñez partially kept. Next to the bark, a zone of light amber-colour wood is at the centre, or heart, of the branches. There are orange-brown hues of different intensities in different zones of the sculpture.

The World’s Origin

This sculpture is carved from the hollow trunk of a Cork oak tree. Ursula Núñez preserved the burnt bark around the hole to respect the original form, as well as the traces of an ancient fire in the heartwood. At the beginning there is the hole, the smooth surface highlights the intricate veins typical of this wood; as you turn around you can see a spinning top-like form leaning on its side.

The Last Dive

The Last Dive, or "La Última Zambullida", is part of Ursula Núñez’s Marinas series. The works of the series are inspired by Ursula’s concern about the state of our oceans and its habitants: in this case, the whales are at the heart of her piece. This small sculpture is hand-carved from a twin-headed branch of an olive tree. This piece has beautiful light amber colour with very discreet veins just a hue darker on the sides of the whale’s tail.
