Committed to sustainably sourced wood

  • • Umut is a self-taught carpenter
  • • His work is inspired by a 20th-century aesthetic
  • • He specialises in working with hand tools and traditional methods

Carpentry has been Umut Lucas Espenaer's hobby since childhood. "I remember that I carved a very elementary shape out of a piece of scrap wood." Having studied for a masters in Political Science and International Relations, Umut secured a position as a lecturer, and simply practised carpentry by constructing his own furniture. After years of teaching himself, he eventually decided to leave the university and embark on a new journey, setting up his own atelier in 2016, with a display cabinet made from reclaimed wood as his debut piece. Aside from demonstrating his sustainable vision with his choice of material, he also stresses the legacy of traditional craft. "It is a pity that innovation usually leads to the abandonment, and eventually loss, of traditional knowledge in the crafts. I have decided to focus on preserving these traditional skills." In parallel, Umut is currently involved in a social project offering opportunities for disadvantaged youth to discover the craft of carpentry.

Façades - Side table

Façades is a set of two loudspeaker stands handcrafted from cherry, ash and walnut. Each stand is composed of an asymmetric framework with a surface in the bottom part and oneon top. As a result of this asymmetry the stands look different from diverse points of view. This distinguishing feature is what gives Façades its name.

Geraamte

Even though Lucas Umut loves all his creations, he holds a particular attachment to Geraamte. It has an airy feel due to its slender frame and absence of any enclosed compartments. Because of this, any object you put in it is immediately highlighted and that is exactly its purpose; Geraamte was designed as a display cabinet. Yet, even while showcasing your precious paraphernalia, Geraamte still makes you aware of its presence.

De Verandertafel – Conference table

De Verandertafel is a big conference table handcrafted from salvaged ash wood that can seat up to 14 people. The tabletop features an exciting pattern and live edges and celebrates the beauty of the ash. The table base follows the trestle model and offers a solid support for the heavy tabletop. It is marked by the use of various versions of the mortise and tenon joint.

Vrede – Bed frame

Vrede is a double bed frame handcrafted from salvaged honey locust, salvaged maple and reclaimed spruce. The bed is characterised by its minimalism in both the frame and the headboard, a conscious design choice meant to create a spacious impression in the relatively small bedroom it is destined for. Vrede offers a delicate balance between design, comfort, and the practical limitations of a small Amsterdam bedroom.

Wortelen

This table was entirely crafted by hand from reclaimed meranti, salvaged black locust and reclaimed marble using traditional hand tools and techniques. The legs and rails were cut from a beam of reclaimed Meranti with a Western-style saw and subsequently flattened and smoothened with a set of Western-style hand planes. The slender sticks were cut in a similar fashion out of salvaged Black Locust from Amsterdam.
