Thomas Schmitter designed this space, which was created partly by him and partly by others under his direction. The space is made from spruce wood, painted white on the exterior and finished with plaster stucco details. The cabinets are fully integrated into the space and assembled with traditional wood joints. The ceiling connection was finished with stucco.

Timeless wooden interiors

It was on a cold winter's day in January 1975 when a young philosophy student went on a hike in the snow-covered Chiemgau. On his way, Thomas Schmitter was invited to have a rest in an old farmhouse, where he was quickly entranced not only by his hosts but by the wooden panelling and furniture in the living room. "It was simple and yet absolutely fascinating work," he says. "Its truthfulness seemed to lie precisely in its timeless simplicity, its natural proportions and in the material itself.” In that moment he realised he wanted to create such things himself. A few days later Thomas applied to the technical school for carpenters and wood sculptors in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Bar cabinet
This bar cabinet was designed and created by Thomas Schmitter. The console stands on two legs and is propped against the wall. It features a shutter door and swivel shelves for a kettle and coffee capsules. To ensure the long-term and trouble-free function of his creations, Thomas attaches great importance to careful construction. Simple, intelligent and reliable solutions are among of the requirements that Thomas's workshop sets for itself.

Library in a townhouse
Thomas Schmitter designed every aspect of this space, from the wooden parquet to the final plaster details, in the spirit of 18th century design. The work was partly done by himself and partly by others under his direction. Wooden columns were turned on a lathe and the panelling assembled using traditional joints. In designing a space it is important to consider the architectural layout of the rooms, which requires a high degree of interpretative power.

Child's bed
This child’s bed was designed and created by Thomas Schmitter. Traditional wood joints were used to assemble the bed, finished with hand painted details and a protective wax coating. Wood, as an organic material, changes its volume even after centuries. The classic techniques of wood joints take this physical behaviour into account by interlocking the individual parts so that they can move against each other without damage.

Maple desk
This yellow ochre maple wood desk was designed and created by Thomas Schmitter. The desk features four drawers and was assembled using traditional wood joints. The desk is protected with a coating of wax. Over the years wood will naturally move. The classic technique of creating wood joints takes this physical behaviour into account by interlocking the individual parts so that they can move against each other without damage.
