Stones to unlock life’s mysteries

  • • Saulius is always looking for stones from the Baltic Sea and fieldstones
  • • He came to jewellery after quitting his career as a lawyer
  • • Every piece of his jewellery has a deep meaning

Saulius Vaitiekūnas never studied jewellery-making. He came to it having quit his career as a lawyer and determined to become an artists. He has followed this vocation unwaveringly for over three decades. Vaitiekūnas creates jewellery from Baltic sea stones with silver inlays. He also creates large-scale installations and regularly participates in exhibitions and jewellery fairs. His jewellery pieces are made of stone and silver, they often feature signs – pictographs and Baltic ornaments – which are like letters to the future, to be read when we are no longer here. He is extremely attached to the Lithuanian land, which provides a source of strength and inspiration for him. It is, therefore, not a coincidence that Vaitiekūnas’ foundation and gallery are called Terra Recognita – “a land known again”.

To be seen

This ring, by Saulius Vaitiekūnas, is made of flint stone and silver. It represents an eye looking, with the centre of the pupil marked with silver, and the rest of the eyeball made of stone. The eyelid around the eyeball is also made of silver, giving a final rendering of an eye to be seen.

Baltic bonsai

The installation “Baltic bonsai” is a creation of Saulius Vaitiekūnas made from Baltic Sea stones found in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, incrusted with various petroglyphs made of silver. It is inlaid with various signs, in which, as if in the grooves of a tree, are embossed marks of time and history itself.

…I will love and respect you for life…

Saulius Vaitiekūnas’s artistic piece "…I will love and respect you for life…" was represented in the international jewellery fair “Ring” in 1999. A marriage vow phrase used as a title reveals a warning – and warns that none of the two rings should be pulled out from the union of two people, in this case the grenade, because it can explode.

For the merits

For the merits is the main concept of the most important national awards, honouring people who are merited by the nation and community. But who will make a merit for being true to oneself and for what you believe in? Saulius Vaitiekūnas made this collection dedicated to the daily choices, which are the most important ones. As a symbolic sign of respect is a simple stone from the shore – a clod of our soil. Stepping forward from this soil, we become what we are today.

One among many – one and only

This neck piece by Saulius Vaitiekūnas is made of natural stones from the Baltic sea and details of silver. The stones are small, round, and numerous, and the silver comes to compliment each stone individually.
