For the love of wood

  • • Richard loves wood and gemstones
  • • His secret to success is perseverance
  • • He embraces new technologies

Richard Kappeller made his first knife in 2000 while attending a specialist timber course. "I was offered beautiful wood and so I bought handle material and a finished blade," Richard remembers. He put the material together following the seller's instructions on his website. During the six months between leaving school and starting military service, Richard learned more knife making techniques through online tutorials. After the army, he rented a small workshop, put in a workbench and bought his first machines. Collectors, huntsmen and chefs alike appreciate Richard's unique style, characterised by special surface treatment and a design language which reflects his love for varied and diverse combinations of techniques and materials. His most recent innovation is to embellish his knife handles with gemstones.

Button Lock

This is a folding knife with a specially developed button lock mechanism. Pressing the button releases the blade and locks it open and closed. The frame is made of stainless rose damask, the handle of desert ironwood and the plates of titanium, to keep the weight of the knife down.

Damast Spitz-Erl-Dolch

Here is a dagger made of three different damask steels. It features a handle made of jet with spiral filing and 18 carat gold and silver wire twisted together and wrapped around the handle. Alternating grooves with a polished and milled surface give the dagger its unique appearance.

Cuisine Flach-Erl

The VG-10, a powder-metallurgy produced stainless blade steel, is surrounded by several layers to combine hardness and flexibility. The handle, made of stabilised sycamore wood, complements the wavy, mottled pattern that runs through the blade.
