Sardinian sartorial tradition in velvet

  • • Paolo and Francesco are father and son
  • • Paolo says that in his region velvet is a second skin
  • • There are many celebrities among their clients

The history of Sartoria Modolo in Orani, at the heart of Sardinia, begins with the determination of the founder Paolo Modolo, who at the age of 11 undertook a six-year apprenticeship. In 1962 he opened his own business, but after starting a family he also had to work as a miner for 22 years. Today Modolo tailoring is internationally renowned for its made-to-measure suits, for men and women, for ceremonies and grooms. Paolo and his son Francesco master a rigorous handmade production of pieces inspired by the Sardinian tradition. Their tailoring hints in particular at the tradition of the Barbagia shepherd and the typical fabrics of the area: velvet, corduroy and orbace (coarse wool). “For us velvet is a second skin,” says Paolo. Francesco and his cousin Salvatore Borrotzu carry on the tailoring craft with Paolo, and the third generation is ready with Emma, Francesco's daughter.
