The Venetian oar maker

  • • Saverio specialises in Venetian oarlocks and oars
  • • His fòrcolas are sought-after also as design objects
  • • He’s passionate and committed to the future of Venice

Venetian rowing is an asymmetrical rowing style with a single, hydrodynamic oar, developed because of the narrow Venetian canals: the rower needs a standing position to increase manoeuvrability. Boats like gondolas require a fòrcola, a peculiar oarlock, made by a special craftsman, the Venetian remèr, like internationally renowned Saverio Pastor. Born in 1958, he trained under the last masters of tradition Bepi Carli and Gino Fossetta. In his workshop near the Salute he creates both traditional and experimental pieces. Thanks to their sculptural shapes, his fòrcolas have also become artworks for interior design. Passionate and socially committed, Saverio participates in many cultural events. Among Saverio’s non-Venetian clients are American rowers and famous architects like Frank Gehry.

Forcola da prua

Replica of a Fòrcola (Venetian oarlock) which was on a gondola da fresco (pleasure boat) that belonged to the Savoia family at the beginning of the 20th century. It has several pivot points for the oar to allow the gondolier to perform the various manoeuvres required to navigate in the narrow canals of Venice.

Forcola da poppa

This fòrcola (Venetian oarlock) is an original creation designed and handcrafted by celebrated remér Saverio Pastor. The piece is particularly interesting since it has several curves and volumes, so that it can provide eight different rowing positions.

Forcola classica da poppa

This fòrcola (Venetian oarlock) is a classic piece for a gondola, handcrafted by remèr Saverio Pastor. It’s normally used by the Venetian gondoliers: height, shape and size of these oarlocks vary depending on the body structure and rowing style of the single rower.

Forcola da prua

A very elegant fòrcola (Venetian oarlock), similar to the gondola type but smaller, created by remér Saverio Pastor with a truly sculptural form. This model was designed for a pleasure sandolo boat, not suitable for the regatta rowing style.
