Painting with light

  • • Mieke restores and makes her own stained glass
  • • She is always drawing and painting
  • • She often works on Flanders’ heritage pieces

Mieke Verwaetermeulen started working on stained glass in 1985, driven by the desire to work in architecture. “Stained glass offers excellent opportunities to work with light in buildings,” she says. She restores old stained glass windows, but also designs her own contemporary creations. “The one activity enriches the other. Through my work in restoration, I built up the necessary skills and learned to focus on the smallest details, which enhances my creative work. The combination also gives me peace of mind.” Mieke is inspired by observations in nature and is always making sketches with pencil and brush. “Classical drawing and painting are very important to me. I am constantly researching and experimenting, which gives depth to the style of my work.” Her studio, Glaskunst Atrium, is situated in a former train station.

Bar of hotel August in Antwerp

In Antwerp, the Chapel of Augustinian Convent was transformed into the bar of Hotel August. Above the bar, two stained-glass windows were restored by Mieke Verwaetermeulen – a circular window and a skylight. They offer a subtle addition to the contemporary lighting of the bar.

Dreamer

This is a mobile sculpture of steel and glass in a private residence. It was installed in a white light shaft. The colours reflect on the blank walls when sunlight enters. The sculpture seeks the contrast between the black woven steel and the transparent glass.

Stained glass at architectural firm Boeckx

This showcases an antique opalescent glass composition in an office space. The mouth-blown glass in the lower part of the composition hides the view of an ugly banister. The top is kept clear, to show the beautiful view of rooftops and church towers. A horizontal band disrupts the geometric grid in a graphic and playful way.

Rosace

This stained glass in the western rose window of the Basilica of Dadizele was made by Mieke Verwaetermeulen. It is a contemporary composition in a basilica full of neo-Gothic stained-glass windows. The colours, and their distribution in the composition, are similar to those of the original stained-glass windows.

Stained glass in Arenberg Castle

Here is the stained glass window artwork in an apse of the chapel at Arenberg Castle, now part of the University of Leuven. The blue refers to the colour of the university’s emblem. In the central window a scroll of text is painted in calligraphy. It gives an overview of important figures and events in the university’s history.
