Glory handmade from the ground

  • • Michael is a ceramicist inspired by nature

Michael Rice’s work is concerned with surface, texture, natural geometry, Gestalt principals and archetypal forms. Materials have always been important to him, and he is driven to create work that displays a mastery over material. He has a degree in Fine Craft Design, a postgraduate certificate in Education (Art and Design), and a Master’s degree in Multi-Disciplinary Design, all from the University of Ulster. Michael is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics based in Geneva. As a writer he has published articles in the UK-based international magazine Ceramic Review, and the Australian publication Ceramics Art and Perception. He recently exhibited at Expo2020 in Dubai and Collect 23 in London.

Extrusion II

This work was created by 3D printing a model and creating a series of moulds. Multiple porcelain components were slip cast and the casts were covered in various coloured crawl glazes and refired. It was exhibited as part of the Taiwan Ceramic Biennale in Taipei in 2020.

Mandala

This work was created by looking at the crawl pattern on an earlier work which was then mirrored and modified in Adobe Photoshop. The design was created in paper clay, the relief pieces were cut and joined on to a large slab which is fired to 1240°C. It was exhibited at Dubai Design Week 2020.

Binary

This vessel was wheel thrown and altered. It was glazed with transparent glaze and raku-fired to 1050°C. It was exhibited at Dubai Design Week 2019.

Red Fragment

This work was created by making a model in paper, covering it with aluminium foil and then with paper clay. It was then finished with a red underglaze and fired to 1240°C. It was exhibited at ‘Collect’ in London in March 2023.

Coriolis

This work was created by rolling out a large slab of clay, applying a texture to the surface, wheel turning it and cutting and altering. Terra Sigillata is applied, and it is saggar fired. It was exhibited at Thrown Gallery in London in October 2019.
