Local materials from the island of Bornholm seem to fuse into the glaze of Maja Frendrup’s pieces. The round vase in stoneware clay has a slight foot and a small opening at the top. The surface structure is porcelain mixed with stones from the beach of Melsted.

Nature on a surface

The colours of the sky, the grains of sand, and the local granite surfaces inspire ceramicist Maja Frendrup. She established her studio in Bornholm after she graduated from the Royal Academy on the island in 2014. Vessels in their archetypical form are her canvas because she prioritises the structures and sensuousness of glaze, so the shape needs to be discrete and classical. Maja's speciality is her crackling and tactile glazes that include natural elements that she finds in nature. A large part of her work is about experimenting with newly found local materials in the glazes because surfaces and the dialogue they create are magical for her. As the chairwoman of ACAB, she is a promoter of professional craft and strives to increase the field's general awareness.

Green prickly vase
Rough, yet easy on the eye. Spiky and raw, yet irresistible in its green and lush colour palette. The round vase has a sharp porcelain structure and crackles that reveal the rough stoneware clay underneath.

Vase with sand from Listed, Bornholm
Matt and silky smooth at first glance, yet with a surface like sandpaper. The light blue colour resembles the sky on a clear summer day and adds a soft contrast to the sandy surface. The surface of the handbuilt vase in stoneware clay combines layers of porcelain and sand from the beach in Listed. The piece is part of the permanent collection of Bornholm Art Museum.

White vase with stones from Melsted, Bornholm
Like candy or jewellery on the surface, stones from the beach in Melsted seem to melt into the glaze. Archetypical in its rounded form but holding its own with its unique expression and edgy appearance.

Ice, sandy beaches and a creamy look go together in this handbuilt vase in stoneware clay. Stones from Sandvig add character to the surface alongside the vertical crackles stemming from the porcelain contracting during firing. Rock walls inspire this piece.
