In Norse mythology, Udgård was said to be the most remote part of the world, far from Asgård and Midgård, and homeland of giants, jötnar. This sculpture of a Viking ship is one of a series inspired by Norse myths, a collaboration between Egeværk and Backhaus-Brown. The smooth oak keel of the ship was carefully constructed to fit the unique hand-blown turquoise glass hull.

A collaborative series between cabinetmakers at Egeværk and glassworkers at Backhaus-Brown, these sculptures of Viking ships elegantly combine wood and glass. The glass hulls are hand-blown using the battuto technique. As every hull is unique, never the same size, every oak keel has to be constructed with care to fit the hull perfectly.

This ship is one of a collaborative series between Egeværk and Backhaus-Brown in which wood and glass are combined and fitted together. It was named after the Valkyries, mythical female deities who, on Odin’s command, chose the warriors who would fall during battle and escorted them to Valhalla.

This unique piece in the VOID series pays tribute to what Egeværk considers to be the most beautiful wood in the world, the dying Danish ash. The process of creating objects by hand is the very essence of Egeværk’s philosophy. VOID was conceived and created as an investigation into the relationship between function, shape, craft and art.
