Born from the art of printmaking

  • • Lejla and Ajla launched Werkstatt in 2015
  • • They use various printmaking techniques to create jewellery
  • • International pop star Beyoncé has worn their creations in her music videos

Lejla Nuhić and Ajla Šarić met at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo back in 1999, where both studied under the mentorship of one of the most respected artists and printmakers in Europe, Dževad Hozo. The two of them became friends and, later, business partners. Their jewellery pieces are crafted at their workshop Werkstatt which came to life in 2015. What kickstarted their work at Werkstatt was the idea of making earrings from the zinc and brass metal plates they used in printmaking. Each piece of their jewellery contains a mini graphic image characterised by contrasting etchings and other visual effects. To achieve this, Lejla and Ajla use a variety of printmaking techniques, such as copper etching, aquatint, dry point, mezzotint, and soft ground.

Gea Tinta Bracelets

Gea Tinta Bracelets vary in size and design from piece to piece. They are made of zinc plates embellished with the graphic processes of aquatint. They are decorated with vivid colours like bright blue, green, and pink, epitomising the carefree spirit of spring. Patterns that adorn them are abstract and handmade, making each of them one of a kind.

Tinta, Zinc and Siva

Several pieces of jewellery are presented in this photo: Gea Tinta Bracelet, Gea Zinc Maxi Bracelet, Wind Tinta Ring, Ala Siva Ring and Gea Siva Ring. Gea Tinta Bracelet, the smaller one, consists of four threads from an etched zinc plate. The bigger one, Gea Zinc Maxi Bracelet, is made of a one-metre-long zinc strip, hand-processed and hand-modelled. The Wind Tinta and Ala Siva rings are also made of a zinc plate, which is embellished with an etching process, to obtain these unique patterns. Each piece is hand-cut, hand-processed, and bent to create the final look.

Gea Gold Bracelet, Lang Gold Ring and Vigo Cross Choker

The Gea Gold Bracelet and Lang Gold Ring exemplify Werkstatt’s most essential message: how a basic design can make a bold statement. The pieces are crafted of brass, which is flexible and light, making them perfect for daily wear. The Vigo Cross Choker is made of a brass base and enhanced with two etched brass stripes. The patterns created by etching brass plates are always different and can never be repeated.

Testa Gold Ring

The Testa Gold Ring is both minimalist and powerful. It is hand-cut and hand-refined from a brass plate. The design is inspired by geometric shapes, which wrap around the curves of the finger.
