Scandinavian rigour meets Japanese flair

  • • Lars loves to be creative when working with clay
  • • The technique he uses is casting in plaster
  • • His minimal designs are enhanced by his use of glazes

After high school, Lars Rank was planning to become a vet when he took a four-month course in ceramics, and resolved that that was what he wanted to do. He graduated from the Jutland Art Academy in 2001 and has worked on numerous art and design projects, always with ceramics playing a key role. Since 2004, he has specialised in designing and manufacturing high-quality ceramic products for the home. Lars’s work is rooted in the Scandinavian design tradition, and all his products are hand-cast in porcelain, a process that demands both precision and dedication. “The design process is an interaction between the material and the idea,” he explains. “It’s not about controlling the ceramic, but about providing a framework in which it can flourish.”

Colour tableware

This 11-piece tableware collection is handcrafted in light brown stoneware clay. The shapes of the tableware items are simple and pure to make room for the glazes to flourish and draw attention to the combination of glazed and unglazed areas that makes the items very tactile. The tableware is available in five different colours: light blue, dark green, blackish brown, yellow, rusty beige and more colours will be added in the coming years.

Idols and authors

These porcelain cups with an under glaze decoration are made in collaboration with author and artist Tomas Lagermand Lundme. The cups are portraits of different artists, authors and musicians, for example Prince, David Bowie, Andy Warhol and Tove Jansson. The cups are cast in porcelain and every cup is decorated by hand under glaze colours and ceramic pencils.

Stacked cups

These cups are made from four or five stacked rings. The displacement of these rings makes the cups comfortable to hold and handle, giving the user’s fingers the possibility of resting on the notches. The cups are cast in beige stoneware clay and are unglazed on the outside but sanded to a silky matte surface. The interior of the cups is finished with a smooth glaze available in a choice of five colours.

Stacked lamp

The structure of this porcelain lamp is handcrafted from five cylinders with different diameters, stacked one on top of the other. The cylinder’s pure form is challenged by the precarious stacking and gives the lamp a very sculptural appearance with a fine balance between order and chaos. The lamp is available in white, blue and grey. The porcelain is sanded to a silky-smooth surface.
