Playing with scale

Juliette Vivien embarked on her journey into ceramics at the age of five, following in the footsteps of her ceramicist grandfather. She then studied at the École Supérieure Duperré, the renowned School of Applied Arts in Paris, where she discovered crystal glazes, which became one of the signature aspects of her work. Juliette’s other specialisation is the playfulness in which she experiments with scale – representing some objects in miniature scale where others are not. This leads to interesting pieces such as combining a miniature teapot on the handle of a full-size cup – with incredible finesse and giving a whimsical feel. All of her pieces are wheel-thrown, even the miniatures. The crystallisation technique only reveals its magic during firing, ensuring that every single one of her pieces is unique.

Mug
This Juliette Vivien mug is made with crystallised ceramics where the motifs appear randomly during firing. This, along with the fact that every piece is individually wheel-thrown, makes every piece unique. This specific piece has enamel in an orange-pink foundation and is ornamented with blue. A miniature teapot on the handle gives the impression of pouring into the cup.

Teapot
This teapot is realised through the technique of crystallised ceramics where the motifs appear randomly during firing. This, along the fact that every piece is individually wheel-thrown, makes every piece unique. This specific piece is covered with a blue and an orange-pink enamel and overhung by a miniature teapot on its lid.

Cathedral vase
This vase, made of white porcelain and satin glaze, is very soft to touch and is inspired by the gargoyled façades of cathedrals. Each of the eight miniatures stands on the indentation of the top rim. This piece is entirely shaped on a wheel by Juliette Vivien, even the miniatures which are turned one by one.
