Piet Hein Eek is best known for transforming scrap wood into furniture using his woodcraft skills since the 1990s. In doing so he reshapes our usual perception of materials and highlights the importance of craft. His classic pieces, such as Waste Table in Demolition Wood, and Classic Cabinets in Scrapwood, express his ideas at their very best. In 2010, he relocated his workshop from Geldrop to the former Strijp-R area of Eindhoven.
He pushes his boundaries by applying the same no-waste philosophy to the use of other materials, such as steel. His cross-disciplinary approach allows him to enrich his body of work with his take on other crafts, instead of focusing on mono-material based techniques. His collaborations with Heinen Delft Blauw for The Flat Ceramics series, and Royal Leerdam Crystal for Enormous Beam Vase, illustrate the importance of crossovers between crafts, and demonstrate how sustainability and craftsmanship can go hand-in-hand to strive for a better future.
