Making miracles with materials

  • • Anne creates futuristic glass objects...
  • • ...and unusual, organic, ceramic sculptures
  • • She is an artisan who walks her own path

From an early age, Anne Türn grew up with her hands in clay alongside her mother, who was a ceramic technologist. She even built her own kiln during her studies at the Estonian Academy of Arts. Ever since then, she has taken her own independent path, overturning assumptions, pushing boundaries, searching out the unknown and trying to find unique outcomes. She has pursued her career fearlessly, taking clay and its possibilities to new heights by combining it with glass, light and other interesting materials. Her delicate yet enchanting works have been exhibited around the world, and Anne has been recognised by several international and local awards, including the GIC Biennale Icheon, Prize de Caroque and Ceramics, and the Colours Award Faenza.

Rain of Light

For as long as she can remember Anne Türn has tried to push the limits of clay, both the material's own properties and by combining it with other materials. The beauty and fragility of transparent porcelain inspired her to use lights and fibre optics. The piece recounts the story of a dark night in August, when you look at the sky and the stars are falling. When you see a star fall, you can make a wish. But if too many stars fall, the wishing never ends.

Drop

Anne Türn likes to test the limits of clay by pushing its material possibilities, both alone and in combination with other materials. This ceramic sculpture does just that, combining Egyptian faience and glass to create a mysterious sculptural form, contrasting materials, their properties, light and dark.

Full Moon

This porcelain sculpture was inspired by the many tales and legends around the imagery of full moons. Anne Türn likes to test the limits of ceramics by pushing its material possibilities, both alone and in combination with other materials. This work combines paper thin, translucent porcelain with end-glow optic fibres, mimicking a moonlit starry sky.

The Stars Are Falling

This piece was inspired by the transparency and fragility of porcelain as well as being a play of light. Throughout her works Anne Türn likes to push the material properties of porcelain, both alone and in combination with other materials. Here she uses the transparent quality of the porcelain, combined with long fibre optic cables, to create a sculptural rendition of the moon and starry sky.

Rain

This work was created to test the material limits of porcelain, as well as Anne Türn's own limits. Using paper clay and letting the mix of glazes and glass melt as they wish, Anne allows them to connect and play. Like a cooperation between creator and materials, she gives them the opportunity and they respond by creating little miracles. This work explores the fragility of nature and life, as well as its power, such as rain on a stormy sea.
