This series of very small vases is made from coil built white terracotta and decorated with blue engobe. Annalisa Valoroso’s inspiration for these ceramic sculptures comes from the shapes of creatures found living on the bottom of the sea.

The birth of a ceramicist

Annalisa Valoroso was born in Palermo, but she isn't interested in the traditional Sicilian ceramic style, preferring instead to use clay to express herself and her feelings. "When I create, I am free, peaceful and strong," she says. Combining craftsmanship and art, Annalisa produces both everyday objects and pieces of art. All her products are unique and entirely handmade, according to the ethos of 'room number three', as her company name, Stanzanumerotre, translates. For Annalisa, this is a real place, the most important place in her life. It is the place where everything started: her son Andrea was born in room number three in the hospital of Palermo, a moment that changed her life completely.

Cipria Bowl
This yellow ochre bowl reproduces the sinuous shape of water in a striking interplay of concave and convex lines. Made in 'cipria' semi-refractory clay, this delicate object is made using slab and coil building techniques.

Africa Jar
Unusually colourful, this jar is made of semi-refractory white clay, formed into a small sphere on top of a bigger one using the coil building technique. The jar is decorated with black, blue, purple, green, grey, white and yellow engobes.

Sea Sponges
The irregular shape of this set of three single flower vases by Annalisa Valoroso is inspired by the form and colour of undersea creatures. Made in white clay, these vases are coil built and decorated with blue engobe before their first firing.

Urchin frame and floral plaster mould
This sculptural ceramic tray is handcrafted from semi-refractory yellow clay, partially glazed in white. It is intended for several uses: a dessert dish, a candleholder, a frame hanging on the wall or simply an object to look at. The plaster mould was added for decorative purposes during the firing.
