Flair and function

  • • Ester and Xavier make exquisite glass dinnerware
  • • Renowned chef Ferran Adrià is their mentor
  • • Their pieces combine function and creativity

Working together since 1991, Ester Luesma and Xavier Vega are the duo behind Luesma & Vega. Although their background comprises both ceramics and glass, since 2010 they have been focusing on the latter, fascinated by its versatility and endless possibilities for bringing shapes to life, using different techniques from fusing to slumping. Their workshop close to Barcelona is where they design and make dinnerware for haute cuisine, now in high demand among renowned chefs. Ester and Xavier seek perfection in their glass dinnerware, which resembles porcelain due to its finish. Their passion for design leads them to always look for ways to balance beauty with function. It's also important to them to establish a collaboration and emotional connection with the client.

Corral moreria

This glass plate is part of a series created for the Madrid restaurant Corral de la Moreria, which celebrates Andalusian culture. The idea for these presentation plates was to evoke the designs found on a traditional gold thread Manila shawl on display in the restaurant. Luesma & Vega used black glass with an iridescent coating in which they could engrave the shawl's motifs.

Cirklo irisado

These special plates were made for the Ábac restaurant in Barcelona, which holds three Michelin stars. Luesma & Vega used their own glass thermoforming systems to obtain unique, organic shapes in each glass plate.

Bamboo

In Japanese cuisine, a bamboo leaf is usually used to serve pieces of fish or nigiris. Luesma & Vega wanted to reproduce a bamboo leaf using a noble material, allowing it to be cleaned in a professional dishwasher, but not lose the essence and delicacy of a natural leaf. These plates were made with chef Albert Adrià for his restaurant Pakta, which has one Michelin star.

Nenufar

These plates, commissioned by the restaurant Celler de Can Roca Nenúfar, are the product of research into new thermoforming glass systems. Luesma & Vega sought to evoke the delicacy of the plant world, in this case the water lily Victoria Creuzana. The plates won the design award in the Bullseye-Emerge 2012 glass competition.
