All about wood

  • • Antrei focuses on sustainability through the innovative use of materials
  • • Inspiration comes from shapes and surfaces moulded by man and nature
  • • In 2013, he won a silver medal in the WorldSkills competition in Leipzig

Antrei Hartikainen's work is a balancing act. By designing and making multidisciplinary projects, installations, sculptures and a wide range of products from wood he blurs the line between nature and technology, art and design, handicrafts and industrial manufacturing. For him, it is all about wood, and hand carving is his main technique. After wood artisan studies at North Karelia professional colleges and master cabinetmaker studies at Salpaus further education, Antrei worked for Nikari Oy from 2010 until 2016. As well as the day job, he was constantly carrying out his own work and finally, in 2017, he started his own studio helped by a grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation. A year later he became Young Designer of the Year in Finland.

Sisin vessels

Sisin (Finnish for 'quiddity') is a unique hand carved series of linden wood vessels. Hollowed out pedestals lend a lightness to the pieces and their hand carved texture accentuates a flowing movement from the sides into the centre. The exceptional beauty of mushrooms, with different textures and surfaces, inspired the forms.

Bastone cabinet and sideboard

The Bastone Case Piece collection consists of a cabinet and a sideboard. Somewhere on the boundary between art and design, the collection showcases the craftsman's interest in studying light and shadow as well as the appreciation of functional craftsmanship in his works. Both the cabinet and the sideboard are partly covered by long and narrow wooden dowel rods. As light enters through the openings in each piece, the interior is revealed while also remaining slightly concealed.

Fiori tables

The tables in the Fiori collection epitomise Antrei's appreciation of natural materials and their beauty. The smaller tables can be positioned below the larger ones, allowing for multiple uses in different types of interiors.

Fossus sculpture

Fossus is a unique sculpture series. The principal focus of the series was to study various methods of presenting hand carved textures in a contemporary way. The wood has been treated with a combination of iron and vinegar to add depth and nuance to the carved texture.

Melt cabinet

For the Melt cabinet, industrially treated pine is transformed into a unique artistic composition. The cabinet was inspired by the metamorphosis of water and the image of ice being melted by rain. The surface was built from hundreds of pine rods glued together one at a time to form multiple layers. This time-consuming method enabled Antrei Hartikainen to create the three-dimensional, fluid movement on the surface.
