Spotlight on French marble

  • • David has worked on prestigious historical monuments
  • • He sculpts a renowned type of marble from Occitanie
  • • He cares about the transmission of his craft

David Léger is the founder of Erriape, a workshop dedicated to the creation, conservation and restoration of works of art made of marble. Between the traditional skills of a stonemason and the artistic expression of a sculptor, his work explores marble in all its splendour. David started stone masonry at the age of 16. For over a decade, he learned the craft in Paris, where he worked on major restoration sites, such as the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Eager to perfect his art, he joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, Italy, and graduated in statuary marble. Only recently did he discover the Grand Antique d’Aubert, a magnificent black and white marble that instantly won his heart. In his sculptures of harmonious lines, David reflects on the voluptuous variation in light and shadow.

Needles

This set of two sculptures is made of a unique black and white marble from the Occitanie region in France: the Grand Antique d’Aubert. These two sculpted forms, elegantly elongated, are standing on marble bases that pivot on brass studs. This creation is inspired by the rocky spikes, crystals and minerals that are found in the mountains.

Constellation

This sculpture is made of a black and white marble called Petit Antique and stands on a white marble base. David Léger works in the Occitanie region in the Pyrenean lands and at the epicentre of one of the most precious sources of French marble and granite. His contemporary creations are mainly made with these magnificent rocks.

Of contemporary elegance, this pair of vases has been crafted in white Carrara marble. Carved in elongated pearl shapes, they have been designed as decoration objects, to embellish interior spaces.

Gaïa

This marble sphere is placed on a white marble base and on a brass axis so that the entire sculpture can be rotated. This sculpture recalls the Goddess of the Earth, Gaia: a way for the artist to honour the main actors who allow him to work with his favourite material, marble.
