The delicacy of paper

  • • Antonin has developed his own paper sculpting technique
  • • He specialises in bas-reliefs
  • • He used to work as a graphic designer

Antonin Anzil takes us on a poetic journey through his bas-reliefs. By means of a drypoint, an engraving tool, and his meticulous gesture, he brings imaginary landscapes to life in paper, playing subtly with light and textures. Invented cartography, abstract motifs: it is up to the viewer to let their imagination guide them. A meeting point between engraving and sculpture, Antonin relies on his artistic education to develop his own approach to paper. After graduating from the European School of Visual Arts in Poitiers, and from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, he worked for several years as a graphic designer for the Francis Kurkdjian Perfume House.

Big circle

This bas-relief sculpted on the surface of the Velin d’Arches paper sheet is entirely handmade. Antonin Anzil uses a drypoint to sculpt the material and create the three-dimensional relief. Through a play of light and shadow, the pattern on the surface of the paper reveals the outlines of a large circle, a planet, a moon.

Screen

These six bas-reliefs, sculpted with a drypoint, depict a vast and abstract landscape, a utopian cartography: organic motifs unfold on all the panels that make up the screen. The bas-reliefs were made on Velin d’Arches paper.

Bas-relief

This bas-relief was sculpted with a drypoint, an engraving tool. It is enhanced with a raised element patinated with golden wax. The composition features a graphic game that mixes shadow, light and gold in an abstract form. The bas-relief was made with Velin d’Arches paper.

Series of light sculptures

This series of light sculptures is made from bas-reliefs on Velin d’Arches paper, which are sculpted with a drypoint and then fixed on light structures. The bas-relief take on volume and generate a more sculptural dimension. The varied motifs, organic, ethnic or even close to decorative art, take on a new aspect.

Subak

This bas-relief on Velin d’Arches paper is sculpted using a drypoint. On the white surface of the paper, an interior landscape emerges, like an invented map. It is up to each of us to construct our own personal images.
