Artistic mirrors: the creative process
There are various phases in the making of an artistic mirror, that will be shown to participants. Planning/design: the designers create paper sketches of the mirror, then developed in detailed drawings on a scale of 1:1 to carve the wooden mirror base and outline the decorations. Cutting/grinding: using the drawings and wooden bases, the glass details are prepared by cutting them to size. The cut pieces are then processed by the grinder. Engraving: the master engraver chooses the layout of the decorations and engraves them using a lathe. Silver-plating/distressing: the glass - engraved or not – is transformed into a perfectly mirrored surface.

In their workshop, unceasing creative gestures bring artistic mirrors to life: the paper drawing becomes a wooden creation, the glass takes form, the stone or diamond grinding wheels refine the edges and engrave thousands of decorations. The magic of silver-plating lets the glass surface reflect the beauty. The making of each Ongaro e Fuga mirror involves techniques that can require more than one hundred hours. The history of these celebrated art objects dates back to 1852, when Angelo Fuga created the first Venetian mirror. Ongaro e Fuga was established in 1954 by Franco Fuga and Tullia Ongaro: nowadays Giuliano, the talented founders' son, keeps the traditional techniques alive, while innovating also through to partnerships with international artists and designers.
