Vilnius pottery traditions

1 hour 5 to 15 people20 euros per person

A visit to the Vilnius pottery centre will immerse you in the history of ceramics. The craftsmen working here will tell you about Lithuanian ceramics: in the museum located in the pottery centre, you will see ancient earthenware found in the territory of Lithuania – from the Neolithic period to the 19th century. You will see tiles that arrived here from Gothic and Renaissance times with which the furnaces of the Palace of the Grand Dukes were decorated. You will hear about the Užupis pottery centre, which has been operating continuously for about 150 years (from the mid-16th until the 18th century). The curious porous ceramics – created by yeast-based foaming technique – are explained. During the hour-long tour, you will not only be able to listen and watch but also touch the clay yourself and try moulding or throwing clay using the reconstructed pottery wheels from the 10th, 15th or 16th centuries, like true ancient potters.
