Toyoharu Kii

Born in Japan, Toyoharu Kii studied oil painting at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts in the 1970s. During these studies he discovered mosaic work, finding himself drawn to this craft, and ultimately deciding to study it. Following his studies, Toyoharu continued his training in Florence under a scholarship awarded by the Italian government. During this training, the artisan learnt techniques characteristic to the Florentine mosaic tradition. Upon returning to Japan, Toyoharu opened his own studio, Mosaic Atelier ING, where he combined his Japanese and Italian training. Over the years, Toyoharu has worked on an impressive portfolio of mosaic creations, including large-scale mosaic installations in public spaces, and is now considered one of Japan’s leading mosaicists.

Toyoharu Kii's works are monochromatic, with abstract designs and textured surfaces. The mosaics are made using Italian marble and enamel as well as handmade Venetian glass tesserae, made by the same family for over 400 years. While Toyoharu's works draw from a centennial technical and material tradition, his designs find their place in a contemporary language.
