Marta Blanc

Metalworker

Marta Blanc composes timeless volumes made of metal wires - most often copper, iron and silver. Mixing gestures and materials according to unexpected and free research, she imposes on her sculptures the crossing of complex and diverse creative stages: her crochet, weavings, knits, engravings are then modelled, hammered, rusted and oxidized, or even damaged or torn. These multiple experiments give birth to objects with light, transparent and organic surfaces suggesting their possible pre-existence in a distant past, real archaeology of the future.

Marta was born in the industrial town of Sokolov under the communist regime of Czechoslovakia. As a child, she used to play near coal mines and chemical factories, with smells and colours of rusted metals and chemicals. She studied chemistry instead of art. She worked as a graphic designer for 10 years in Prague and after moving to Switzerland and having to endure the uprooting, she felt the necessity to express herself via art, especially painting and metal sculpting.
