The photograph depicts the Japanese National Living Treasure Isao Onishi working at his atelier. He is an accomplished urushi lacquerware craftsman, master of kyūshitsu lacquer application techniques, working mainly on magewa-zukuri (bentwood) crafts. Onishi undertakes the whole process of creation himself, from the selection and preparation of raw materials to the application of urushi and the finishing polish.
